I remember I must have checked my Gmail page every 15 minutes to see if the feature had been rolled out for my account yet. I suppose POP is indeed better when it comes to a web based service - one that you don't run yourself that is.

And yup, I wasn't sure whether to do it (go pink) but I just changed some colours for now, and that of course does the trick a bit already. Still have to do a post about it and perhaps see if I can create some themed header later. You joining in this year? I remember it was such a cool big thing back when we were in 9rules. These days that just seems like a lame place to hang out...

Re: Are we in the cloud yet?

I set up Gmail IMAP in Mail.app and just dragged all the 18,000+ emails from "All Mail" to a mailbox on my Mac. Took three days. I couldn't get the chat messages off, sadly, and deleted them.

Now I'm using Gmail POP and I've set it up so that my emails are deleted when they're accessed via POP.

I see you've gone pink for October once again!

Re: Are we in the cloud yet?

I wasn't so much concerned with identity theft, not at first at least, because to me it seems our data is more locked in with these services than anything else. Of course, if one of these companies does go evil, there's no telling what'll happen to our data, and that is worrying.

So, what's that downloading you're doing? You're actually physically getting your mails off of the Google servers? Is that a standard option or some plugin/hack you needed?

Re: Are we in the cloud yet?

It's Google (or any other company—Facebook, for one) "going evil" that worries me most. They store so much of our personal information that identity theft could become unimaginably easy for a person who has access to it. With my photos, videos, likes, dislikes and status updates, you could replicate me and successfully prove that I'm the clone. :D

As I type this, all my email is being downloaded off Gmail onto my computer. The downside is that I won't be able to easily access it from anywhere, but it's a precaution I'm willing to take.
