True, the freedom of just hopping in your car and going somewhere (granted you have the time and a reason to go) are no doubt the greatest advantages of having a car. And being able to leave the house in a place where public transport is bad or non-existent is a boon too.

I've had a car (and worked to support it) since I was 16. Where I grew up, there was no such thing as public transportation so there isn't much choice if one wants to get around.

Now that I live in one of the largest cities in the U.S., I only use public transportation if I know I won't have any surprises during the day, or if my car is out of commission. I drive a little BMW convertible, about as aerodynamic as a barn door but a blast to drive. It's 15 years old, has 210,000 miles on it, and I love it more every day. I've only had it a little over a year, but have put almost 50K miles on it in that time. If I had to do that on a bus or train...I'd still be on it.

Thanks. Yep, I'll probably still be taking the bus to work for a while. It's just too easy, sitting staring out of the window, or reading, with your headset on and thinking vague and useless thoughts. Instead of watching out for nutters suffering from road rage that is.

I didn't learn to drive until I was 28 - I just seemed to be able to get by and do stuff without needing to. These days because rural public transport is so awful, I need a car in order to avoid a 4 hour commute that is less than 20 miles each way.

With regard to age and aptitude to driving, a friend at work who is in her 50's told me that her mum decided to learn to drive in her mid 70's and pased when she was 76 years old.

Regarding choice of car, I leased a brand new car once for three years - the initial good feeling you get of driving something nice and new wears off very quickly and it becomes just a mode of transport - an expensive one though - since then, I'll drive anything, I'm not fussy - I'd rather have the money for other stuff.

If public transport was better, I'd much rather use it than drive though - there's a lot to be said for being able to read and relax while somebody else does the driving. In the UK, public transport is ok in the cities, but get out of the way and it soon deteriorates.

Of course, it was my employer who politely suggested that I get a licence. There was no talk of hatchbacks, but I'm not getting in one of those either. Imagine, a Mini Metro. The shame!

Like you, I don't drive. I have no intention of learning any time soon, either. (You need money for that.)

I always dreamed of having a Porsche 911 when I was younger. But I think I'd prefer a Camaro or something now. Of course, if I had to buy a sensible car, I have no idea--I just know it wouldn't be one of those silly little hatchbacks everyone's driving these days.
