Dotcomslashblog: Kids Are Stupid

  • Alex · 1 year ago
I see (or at least hear,) kids acting like this fairly often. But really, it's nothing new. Average joe schmoe is all. It's the same sort of mindset of people that don't know or care how many cylinders the engine in their car has, why you should change the oil regularly, what type of fuel is best for it, etc.

Most people just don't care how things work--only that they do in fact work.

But I'm with you. I want to know. I like to know. It annoys me when people flaunt their ignorance.

i second everything you said, this world would be great if it werent for f*cking users. Kids are total morons

I agree on most parts, but think of it like this.

At that time, were you among the majority? Probably not.

The same amount of kids are probably sitting, programming, or modifying their cases/mobos for fun. However, technology has permeated our culture very deeply. The stupid little gnats that at one time would've been talking about the Walkman being the best Radio on the planet, are now talking about their iPods with 20Mb of space.

If everyone were educated enough to understand the technology we use, it would be a very different place. (Hell, I can't tell you why my car runs, but I can build, rebuild, and remake a computer, or anything with woodworking... )

Alex: That's it. it's not so much that they don't know, but that people think they do. Themselves include.

    Jeff: Wise words, wise words.

Kyle: True. Good thing we have experts. Who else would we pay to fix our stuff?

I couldnt agree more, but it isn't always kids. I constantly here about someone confusing ram with storage/hardrive space. "512 mb" does that mean my harddrive is full...oh sheesh!
  • peroty · 1 year ago
Replace "kids" with "grown adults" and talk of whiz bang ipods and bluetooth with "my internet is broken" and "my web is down."

I am in the midst of Outlook 2003 upgrades at work. Yes, I note the irony in upgrading to a program already 5 years old. And it's like the Second Coming of Jesus around here. People are just as freaked out! lol

You're right, it's not just kids. Someone I talked to wondered what a browser was and whether she could write "those emails" with it. So LOL indeed.

I see what you're saying Nils. I like to think that I've a decent amount of tech knowledge, more than the average joe in College/School and I always make an attempt to avoid using those sort of annoying terms, however, sometimes they don't understand you if you do that... I do however, try to correct them, and the example Peilo gives is a prime example of what I always hear too. I always inform them of the different between RAM and hard drive space.

I have to admit, though, I am not ignorant when it comes to the type of things that you speak of in this entry but some will see me as exactly the same; 'a stupid kid', 'an ignorant kid' other areas like (for arguments sake) cars...

Ah! Excellent article/rant. Immediately after reading it I proceeded to share it with the numerous people I've had this very same conversation with countless times.

Everyone with the "kids are so ahead these days." Yeah right, if anything kids are freaking behind.

They may understand the basics of an iPod interface (which is about as intuitive as you can get, btw) but they have absolutely no comprehension of what I would call "technology." It's like saying that possessing the ability to microwave your dinner means you're an expert in atomic physics.

Feh to the kids! That's what I say.

    A few more points:

One: the older folks who think that kids are so smart are the ones who can't figure out how an iPod works or what flash media is. The people without the clue are the ones making the judgement towards those who only know a little better.

Two: these kids who "are so smart" in things technological are the same ones who have no concept of the real, material things in the world. For example, the kid taking a 35MPH corner at 85 and wondering why their car doesn't stay on the road (physics), or why their ears are constantly ringing so badly they have to crank up their iPods to hear them (biology).

At some point the population is going to split into the Morlocks and the Eloi, and technology will be one defining factor.

    Cheers.

Aidan: Yeah but you don't talk about cars in public do you? You don't tell other people how great your car is, and then not know anything about it... That's the thing, they act real snooty, people start thinking they know their shit, and in the end they're ignorant. I'm convinced that when you talk about photography, you have indeed read up on it, and you know what you're talking about, or at least try to understand.

Travis: Indeed, because by that comparison, since I've been sick and taken medicine before, I would now know everything about pharmacology. Guess not. Glad you liked the article and thanks for sharing it.

Joe: Very good point about the physics and biology, that's exactly what I meant. And the kids I'm talking about do look the type that would wonder what went wrong after they'd driven their moped through a jersey barrier without being able to brake. "Oh, it was because I was going to fast then, was it?" LOL!

    Aren't we all getting old.
  • Nils · 1 year ago
Maybe you are. I've actually started to reverse. Peculiar process. Wonder where it'll end.

Two cells, hurrying back to indefiniteness.

Growing up during the 90's I noticed some kids acted like sponges with technology and other kids ignored technology and instead took learned the minimum skills needed to use a computer.

Kids are dumb shits. I'm a kid, and I'm a dumb shit. I know more than most -- and when I hear other kids talking about I.T. stuff thinking they know it all, it really makes me laugh.
