Dotcomslashblog: New Trends In Search

I like Google. I type in what I'm looking for, it generates the most relevant results. Who needs a fancy interface when you just want to type in a query? Google + del.icio.us = all the search you'll ever need.

True. I think it's interesting though, that these companies are looking for other ways of going about things. I'm sure Google are too. But, indeed, when it comes down to it, it's the results that count and I don't see that changing before we break out of the browser entirely.

I agree with Smaran, I like to keep things nice and simple. 3D visualization of search results just makes me ask, "Why?". Not only do most of these newfangled (yes, I said newfangled) interfaces seems silly and gratuitous, they suck from a usability standpoint.

I hate to be curmudgeonly, but why fix what's not broken?

Hey Brian! Glad to see you around. The usability is indeed very low. matter of fact, I played with these a bit, and so far none has really taken my fancy. Sticking with Google as well.

Although I still default to Google, every now and then I pop into Ask.com for a more visual approach. If they work on the usability of these fancier interfaces, I'm sure they'll take off.

Thinking of my parents using Google, still the nuances of search are lost on them. Without fail my dad will click on the first link, without even considering that they paid to be there.

Hey Joe D, yeah I too pop over sometimes. Live, for instance, I check out for work, and with Ask I really like their combined results. Say, if you type in a city, you don't just get hotels and cheap flights, but instant weather, population, or historic info. That's something even Google could learn a lot from.

LOl @ your parents though. Cute.

You might want to check out some of Google's experimental search things. It's not in the realms of 3D search (again I ask why?!) but they could be quite useful, particularly the Time Line view.

Hey Phil! I think I've tried Time Line. Very experimental still, indeed. But yeah, there's always something fun to discover in Google's Labs. I should hang out again some time. Thanks for the headsup.
