Dotcomslashblog: No Blog Is an Island

I read somewhere, that commenting leaves a permanent link back to your blog. Although I haven't seen it in my statistics. I have seen traffic come from other blogs, because of a comment left. The downfall though, is I started getting a lot of spam. I had to enable coment moderation, which I think hurt. People want to see their comments posted right away. I try to leave a comment on every blog, as long as I have something relevant to the post or conversation. Otherwise, "no comment" is my policy.

I've been getting the spam thing as well now, but my junk filter so far keeps it withing bounds. It is a shame really that commenting should lead to that kind of undesired attention. Glad you made the effort.

As I've mentioned before, I don't think this should be a "rule" kind of thing. On my blog, I seldom return comments within my comments. That being said, if the comments to a particular post tend toward questions, I feel somewhat obligated to respond with answers. Sometimes these answers will be from within the comment thread itself, other times I'll email the person asking the question.

In short, I think the best way to approach this is with common sense... Just do what seems most appropriate at the time.

Thanks for the insight. Being relatively new to the blogosphere I always wondered about this particular dilemma - and approached it on a case by case basis. Glad to see that I instinctually chose the more acceptable route.

I dont think that comments is the way to keep up a discussion generally, maybe in certain cases, but that's rare.

And really, it's up to the blog owner what he/she wants to do with the comments, its his/hers blog after all.

But I feel that it's polite to give some kind of response though.

I believe this is the first post that actually turned into something of a (benign) discussion. In fact, that was a bit what I had in mind. Of course I will keep doing as I please, but I appreciate the chance of hearing others' views; it is always enlightening. And now I'm back to posting.
