I agree, it is peanuts. A country's heritage is far more important that money. In my country, India the government isn't doing too great a job of preserving our heritage. It's private organisations that carry out the task. And digitisation is not really a reality yet.

It's perhaps ironic, but some material might even be in the hands of the British. That would guarantee preservation to some extent, but in that case you should also get it back. Or at least a copy of it ;-)
If I ever have some time, :-P, I might check how my own country, Belgium, is doing. Ours is probably in a sad state, as well.

It's sad that the Brits have material that's important to the history of your country and won't give it up. The largest diamond in the world used to belong to my country before they took it for safe-keeping. At least they got something out of colon-isation.
