Dotcomslashblog: You Evil Yahoo You

I can't agree with you more! It seems like everyday I'm helping someone with one issue and "oh, can you remove this Yahoogle toolbar too? I don't know where it came from."

I think it's even being packaged with Flash updates. Which pisses me off to no end. I'm just waiting for someone to click the java update with OPEN OFFICE! Thankfully most of my users don't have admin rights. However, there are enough of them I'm waiting for the open office removal calls to come in.

I've seen those too. Flash with the Google toolbar. I suppose they're just as bad. The Yahoo! rant is just an example - unfortunately.

I actually made a screencast instructing those without Flash how to get it, and I have to warn them not to click something?

    It's nuts.

I keep my browser clean and only install things that I want. Yep, I install them, and I don't want them installed on my behalf.

I am amazed when I sometimes see other people's PC and they wonder why it's not performing that well. It's got yahoo toolabr, google toolbar, pop-ups from Realplayer, animated cursers, and loads of other software running in the background.

I'm sure they don't know what half of it is and have installed it by accident, but it annoys me to think that they've been tricked into it. You'd think that a company like yahoo would be more transparent, and that if they really had faith in their products then they wouldn't have to con you into using them.

Exactly. I have stuff installed because I wanted it. Funny how we go crazy over invites or even copied software because it has this must-have image, while others we don't even want to think about. They then resort to these practices and you get quite different sets of users: those in the know, with all the good apps and decent system performance, and the suckers who pay the price. Sad.

You think that's what makes yahoo evil? wait til you read their TOS. I especially like the part where it says "Hey, our login cookies and all are basically spyware and you cant remove them"
  • Nils Geylen · 2 years ago
Seriously? I gotta see that. Honestly, I don't read TOSs but perhaps I should. Thing is, you have to agree 100% or not use the software.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if it were spyware. Another funny thing: if the app is good, we're more than happy to share almost everything (Twitter) but at least that's because we want to and know about it.

My wife uses the Yahoo! Messenger IM client on her Mac, and even that version is crap. All the useless plugins and what not. It just flies in the face of all we hope to see on the web.

Hope-crushing, indeed. They say the way forward is the only way, but yeah, sometimes you wonder.

Hear hear - I avoided installing yahoo on my new computer - it is bliss without it.
  • Nils Geylen · 2 years ago
It certainly is, Nicola. Keep it that way, I'd say. Thanks for dropping by, and for taking the time to comment. Cheers!
